Desire to know the Bible
I work as an optical engineer for a small firm in Tucson, Arizona. Being under the ministry of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee has helped me to live my Christian life. It has greatly helped me to understand more in depth about the Bible.
I had a desire to know more about the bible since I was in high school. One course, which really got me interested in knowing more about the Bible was Latin III. I had taken both Latin I and II in my two previous years when I was in 10th and 11th grade. In my senior year (12th grade), I decided to take Latin III to finish the series. Latin III mostly consisted of translating ancient letters written by statesmen in the Roman government, such as Caesar, Cicero, Augustus, etc. One day in class I translated a letter in Latin written by an unknown author saying that Jesus went to different places, met people and healed the sick. My inference was that this author was probably a Roman spy following Jesus and recording all that he saw. I guess he was similar to the FBI agents that we have today. I asked my Latin teacher if I had translated correctly and his reply was affirmative. After translation, there was no doubt in my mind that there was a person named Jesus who walked on this earth. The question I had then was who was He. Was He the Son of God as Christians proclaimed Him to be, or was He just a prophet like what the Jews believe?
I went to college and met a guy who was a Christian and lived directly across from my dorm. He invited me to go to a church on Sunday morning with him. The church we went to was non-denominational. We had a Bible study with Christians from other dorms. It was in college where I began to know more about the Bible.
After I graduated from college, I went to graduate school in Pittsburgh, PA. I asked God to show me more about the Bible because I did not feel that I had learned enough about the bible in my four years in college.
It was in graduate school that I began to meet with the local church and came to know who Watchman Nee and Witness Lee were. A brother in Christ had the same advisor as I had and he invited me to come to a meeting on Wednesday night on campus. There I met some brothers who were from the local church in Pittsburgh. I admit that the meeting style was different from that of the non-denominational church I went to when I was in college, but it did not bother me. I was more interested in what the church in Pittsburgh has to offer in presenting the content of the Bible. Some of the concepts such as “experience of Christ” and “enjoying Christ” were foreign to me. I had never heard these terms before. After going to the church in Pittsburgh for a longer period of time, I came to know that Witness Lee always used the Bible as the basis for his messages. You can locate everything he said in the Bible. He is able to expound the Bible from Genesis to Revelation coherently. In the past, I had thought the Old Testament and New Testament were disjointed and not related to each other. Witness Lee has shown me that the Old Testament is the shadow of the coming Christ and the New Testament is the reality of Christ. Also, prior to reading the ministry, I did not hear the book of Revelation talked about. Witness Lee, however, has given many messages about Revelation. The book of revelation shows that the Christian believers will ultimately be transformed (2Cor 3:18) so that there will be a union between God and man. I believe I have come to know the Bible in depth by staying in the ministry of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee. I have also come to realize that knowing the Bible in depth for pure knowledge sake is not good enough. What does it mean to be a Christian? To be a Christian means that you allow the Spirit to operate in you so that you will eventually be transformed into the image of Christ ( 2 Cor. 3:18)
